What is Drontal?

This drug must be prescribed by your veterinarian. It is an effective solution for when your dog or puppy has worms.  In general, this dewormer is used for the removal of roundworms, hookworms and tapeworms and Drontal Plus is also effective at treating for whipworms.

Ingredients:

Praziquantel: This drug is primarily used against tapeworms (cestodes), the most common in dogs being the Dipylidium caninum. It can also be used to fight less common types of worms as well as flukes. This medication takes effect by incurring damage to the parasite’s skin internally so that the worm disintegrates and is removed by the dog’s immune system. In most cases, you will not see the dead tapeworms passing from the host after deworming, while you can see roundworms most often.

Pyrantel pamoate: This is the other main ingredient found in the Drontal Plus that primarily treats against hookworms and roundworms. It causes sudden contraction and paralysis of the worm. The result of which is for the worm to lose hold of the intestinal wall and to pass out of the dog’s system by normal stool or possibly diarrhea. Occasionally they may pass through vomiting.

Febantel: This ingredient is the portion that is highly effective against whipworm. Drontal alone without this or the Plus, will not treat against whipworm.

Possible side effects:

The possibility of vomiting may occur but is not necessarily common with this drug.

In summary, here is what you can expect with this common pet wormer:

  • the Plus formula is effective against virtually all gastrointestinal worms
  • most often, only a single treatment is needed
  • this is a safe and gentle drug to use on your pet
  • it may be combined with other treatments such as with flea and tick treatments and general vaccinations
  • may be safely given to dogs of all ages including puppies and older dogs (be sure to read the instructions and give the correct dosage according to your dog’s weight)
  • little to no side effects for your beloved pet
